Funding For Middlesbrough Musicians

 

Funding from BBC Children In Need has given a lifeline to a popular Middlesbrough music group. Steelworks-Middlesbrough’s first steel band has have been awarded a grant of £22,000 to provide opportunities for local Children and young people to learn to play steel pans and take part in performances across the town. This will be run under their Hemlington Heartbeat Project

 

The group rehearse on a regular basis at Viewley Hill Space For Sport And Arts, Hemlington and The Acorn Centre Acklam, and they have been providing music for the prestigious events such as Music Live, Middlesbrough Mela, Middlesbrough football club and town centre occasions over the last 8 years.

 

“This is really great news for us. We have worked with over 1000 young people, trough taster workshops and regular rehearsals, over the last two years. We wanted to develop this good work further, and with the welcome funding for Children In Need, it means that we can offer opportunities to more local youngsters;” said Brian Wise, Steel Pan Teacher

 

The funds will allow Steelworks to provide additional workshops, rehearsal opportunities and recruit more young people to some new steel bands.
